The Exhibition Common Witness: The Rape of Nanjing 1937 Held in Caen, France

On October 22, 2016, Common Witness: The Rape of Nanjing 1937, an exhibition with lots of historical record and exhibits was held in the Peace Memorial of Caen, France. The exhibition is co-hosted by China Foundation for Human Rights Development, China Society for Human Rights Studies and Jiangsu International Culture Association, and co-organized by Nanjing International Culture Association, Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders and Peace Memorial of Caen, France. The exhibition spans 800 square meters, with over 270 photos, 50 pieces of exhibits and 8 videos on the Nanjing Massacre, which will last nearly two months till December 15.

The exhibition is composed of four parts, i.e. Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, Refugees Rescuing by Americans and Europeans, Initial Report by Some Western Media Outlets and Peace Pursuing by People at Home and Abroad. The first displaying method is telling the historical story from a third-person view on the basis of American and European archives. Some Western archives such as telegraphs of the US Consulate General in Shanghai, Minnie Vautrin’s Diary, The Illustrated London News, Life Magazine of US and excerpts from The Verdict of Tokyo Trial are displayed to present the Nanjing Massacre experienced and witnessed by some Americans and Europeans. The second displaying method is selecting some classic historical stories. This part of exhibition introduces 24 stories, such as the French priest Robert Jacquinot assisted some Americans and Europeans in Nanjing to build shelter for protecting refugees; John Rabe, a German called “Oriental Schindler”; Vautrin, an American protected refugees as what a hen did to its chicks; Wilson, an American doctor saved and treated Chinese victims day and night. The third displaying method is making the themed showcases which can be closed related with contents on displaying boards. For example, the cruciform, which resembles the logo shape of safety zone in Nanjing, is utilized when foreigners saving refugees is introduced. The fourth displaying method is adopting a “12-second” interactive installation. The concept of “12-second” refers to the Nanjing Massacre, which lasted from December 13, 1937 to January 1938 (six weeks in total), during which more than 300,000 civilians and Chinese unarmed soldiers were killed by Japanese invaders. If it is calculated in seconds, a life disappears every 12 seconds. Audiences could scan the QR code on Visit Pass when entering the exhibition hall, and visiting time is recoded from then on. After finishing the visiting, audiences could know their actual time of staying in the exhibition hall through re-scanning the QR code. And then audiences would know during the period, how many lives had passed away in Nanjing from December 13, 1937 to early January 1938. Visiting label could be printed as a souvenir for exhibition visiting.
